Yarmuth Allies Efforts to Raise Gas Tax

Jeff Reetz Statement on Yarmuth Allies Efforts to Raise Gas Tax

(Louisville) In a hearing today in the Select Revenue Measures Ways and Means Subcommittee, Yarmuth allies outlined their next proposal to TAX the American public – an increase in the gasoline tax to help fund “infrastructure banks.”

“Like many of the residents of the 3rd District, I am amazed but not surprised that Democrats in Congress are even thinking about more taxes on the middle class.  Our country is suffering and yet Democrats in Congress are trying to find more programs that not only increase your taxes but also increase government spending – spending that we cannot afford.”

Yarmuth ally Rep. Earl Blumenauer, is quoted as stating the following: “Congress could raise the gas tax and delay its effective date for years while the economy continues to recover. The government could borrow against the anticipated increased revenues.” (CQ Daily 5/13/10)

Reetz stated, “As a small businessman, I am seriously concerned about the thinking going on in Yarmuth’s group when they advocate borrowing money they don’t have based on “perceived” revenue projections that may never materialize.  The end result is that Congress will realize in a few years that they have to provide another bailout to pay for their mistakes.”

“The 3rd District doesn’t need to pay more in taxes, they deserve someone who will stand up to the other Members and demand more accountability and less government.”

“On May 18th, I call on all Republican voters to send a message to John Yarmuth that he and his Tax and Spend friends need to find another line of work.  Please vote Republican Jeff Reetz and Put Louisville First.”

YarmuthCare Costing More MONEY

Jeff Reetz Statement on YarmuthCare Costing More MONEY

(Louisville) “Earlier today, the Congressional Budget Office announced that Obama/YarmuthCare could add more than $115 Billion in increased Government sponsored and Taxpayer paid funding than originally estimated.”

“Just a few months ago, Yarmuth boasted that the non-partisan CBO was very clear in saying that Congress was living within their means.  We didn’t believe it then and with today’s news we were right not to believe the rhetoric.”

“The CBO stated that a majority of the increased costs would come from additional administrative expenses at the IRS and Department of Health and Human Services.  This is outrageous that the American tax payer is paying for the increase in federal jobs needed to ENFORCE and COLLECT all the taxes called for in Obama/YarmuthCare.”

“It is even clearer now that the 3rd District needs a Representative that works with them to solve the problems facing our country not someone intent on following Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama!”

Statement on Yarmuth Paying People Not to Work

Jeff Reetz Statement on Yarmuth Paying People Not to Work

(Louisville) “Like many residents of the 3rd District, I am saddened that instead of trying to put people to work, our “employee” would rather incentivize people not to work by extending unemployment benefits for the rest of the year.”

“Time and time again, Yarmuth and his allies are spending the taxpayers hard earned money while adding more money to the deficit.  This new effort to extend unemployment benefits for an additional 6 months will do nothing to get people working – instead we will continue to hear stories from local businesses that can’t find people to do substantive work because they will lose their “Yarmuth/Pelosi money”.”

“It is tragic that Yarmuth and his allies preached to the American public how they would strictly adhere to PayGo and yet now they seem to be operating under the PAY NOT TO GO principle.”

“The 3rd District deserves a Congressman who will actively support policies that put people to work in the Private Sector – not someone who will treat the taxpayers as ATM’s.”

The Putting Louisville First Bus Tour

Jeff Reetz Launches Putting Louisville First Bus Tour May 11th

(Louisville) On May 11th, Jeff Reetz will launch a week long bus tour of the 3rd Congressional District for the final Primary campaign push. Coming on the heels of the Louisville Courier Journal and Kentucky Right to Life Endorsements, Reetz clearly has the momentum in this campaign and is well positioned to take on Yarmuth in the fall.

“Over the past few months, I have had the opportunity to connect with thousands of concerned Louisvillians and this bus tour is just another way that we are getting our message out to the masses.  Over the coming week, I will bring my message of Putting Louisville First to every corner of the 3rd Congressional District.”

“I look forward to continuing our efforts to bring Real Solutions to the problems facing Louisville and our Country come May 18th and then again in November.”

“We will be making stops at local businesses, parks, and downtown locations and I invite every interested resident of the 3rd district to join us on the Putting Louisville First Bus.”

The Courier Journal endorses Jeff Reetz

ICYMI: Pro-Life and Pro-Gun Jeff Reetz Receives the Courier-Journal Endorsement

(Louisville) In the May 8th edition of the Louisville Courier-Journal, Jeff Reetz was identified as the Best Choice for Republicans on May 18th.  Please read the highlights below or the full article can be found online at www.courier-journal.com.

Nonetheless, it is possible to differentiate among the candidates, and the best choice for Republicans would be Jeff Reetz, a franchisee of 30 Pizza Hut outlets in Kentucky, Indiana and two other states. Although he toes the hard-right line on abortion, gun control, gay marriage and other hot-button social issues, his emphasis is on offering constructive ideas at the federal level for increasing jobs and healing an ailing economy.”

“In this regard, Mr. Reetz supports tax credits for businesses that hire new employees and cuts in federal spending in areas outside national defense and Social Security. He also favors making the Bush administration's tax cuts permanent, in order to boost consumer spending.”

He would be in a position to engage in a useful discussion this fall with Mr. Yarmuth, who is unopposed on the Democratic side, and to give voters a responsible choice.”

“Equally important, Mr. Reetz's tone is appropriate. He avoids demonizing Democrats or other opponents, and views Washington's seeming dysfunction as a product of entrenched incumbents of both  parties. In a district that has tilted Democratic in recent elections, and was the only one in Kentucky carried by President Obama, Mr. Reetz's temperate demeanor could strengthen the GOP's hand.”

Statement on Yarmuth’s Support for High Unemployment

Jeff Reetz Statement on Yarmuth’s Support for High Unemployment

(Louisville) “As a small businessman and an American, I am disappointed with the news today that the U.S. unemployment rate is approaching 10%.  Even more disappointing is the response from Yarmuth’s allies in the Administration stating that we will not see low unemployment rates again for a very long time, if ever.”

“White House adviser Larry Summers on Friday predicted that past employment rates will not return after the recession passes. ‘The best way to put it is this: Forty years ago, one in 20 men [ages] 25 to 54, in America, was not working at a given point in time,’ he said. ‘Today, the number is not one in 20. It’s one in five. And a good guess, based on extrapolations of trends in this area, is that when the economy recovers, five years from now, assuming we return to normal cyclical conditions, one in six men who are 25 to 54 will not be working at any point in time.’” (Jay Heflin, “Summers Predicts Perpetually High Unemployment,” The Hill, 4/30/10)

“Instead of improving the economic climate by providing incentives and reducing regulations to small businesses so that they can create jobs, John Yarmuth would rather force more mandates and taxes on the backs of the American small business and middle class.”

“As one of the lead water carriers for Nancy Pelosi, Yarmuth has actively supported Nationalized Health Care, increased Government competition with the private sector, and now a “Financial Reform” bill that would create another massive tax payer funded bailout for Wall Street.”

“The 3rd District deserves a Congressman that will actively work on Real Solutions to creating jobs as opposed to giving the unemployed a reason not to work with additional unemployment benefits.”

“Yarmuth’s track record proves that he would rather create a Government supported welfare state than allowing the private sector and the American tax payer to prosper.”

“As the 3rd District’s employee, I will work with residents of Jefferson County to bring Real Solutions to the economic problems facing the taxpayers.”

Jeff Reetz Calls on Yarmuth Ally/Friend Nancy Pelosi to Pass a Budget

Jeff Reetz Calls on Yarmuth Ally/Friend Nancy Pelosi to Pass a Budget

(Louisville) “I am shocked that the Yarmuth party controlled House of Representatives have yet to pass a budget for Fiscal Year 2011.  As millions of Americans are faced every day with making hard financial decisions based on the money they currently have, the U.S. House is neglecting a fundamental responsibility for purely political reasons.”

“According to the Budget Act of 1974, should the House not pass a budget resolution by May 15th; the full House is able to consider spending bills.  I have yet to see a statement by our current representative calling on his colleagues to help restore fiscal accountability to our Country by passing a balanced budget (or any budget for that matter).”

“It is readily apparent to me and millions of other Americans, that the Yarmuth backed leadership in the House doesn’t want to vote on the budget because they know tough cuts are needed and they don’t have the will power to make them.”

“As a small businessman, I know what operating within a budget entails and I certainly understand that you can’t take the Yarmuth approach of taxing and spending our way to prosperity. The 3rd District deserves a Congressman who will work with them in making the hard cuts needed to restore fiscal sanity back to our Country.

“It is embarrassing to the voters of the 3rd District that we have an “employee” who is shirking his responsibility to his “employers.”  Join me in calling on Yarmuth/Pelosi to put politics aside and pass a budget.

Statement on Yarmuth’s ally’s proposal to raid the Retirement Cookie Jar

Jeff Reetz Statement on Yarmuth’s ally’s proposal to raid the Retirement Cookie Jar

(Louisville) “In another attempt to “thank” big labor, the John Yarmuth backed White House is considering seizing private 401 (k) plans.  I am astounded by the Democrats plan to gain yet more control over the private sector.”

“This attempt to mandate that employers include an “annuitization” option would have a disastrous impact on the retirement security of millions of Americans.”

“I strongly support the efforts of Republicans in Congress to stop the creation of “Guaranteed Retirement Accounts, (GRAs)”. GRA’s have the potential to cost the taxpayers billions of dollars with a Government backed guarantee on returns above the rate of inflation.”

“At a time when the public overwhelmingly supports the existing 401 (k) system and are equally opposed to more government bailouts, Yarmuth and his allies need to stop looking at finding more ways to spend our hard earned money.”

“The 3rd District deserves a Congressman who will stop government spending and provide real solutions to our economic problems.  With the residents of Jefferson County by my side, I will bring my experience as a small businessman to Congress to help take the burden off of Americans and restore fiscal sanity to our Country.”

Statement on Yarmuth’s Big Government is Good Philosophy

Jeff Reetz Statement on Yarmuth’s Big Government is Good Philosophy

(Louisville) Yesterday, the Gallup Organization released their Job Creation Index for April with some surprising results.

“It is deplorable that our Federal Government is outpacing the private sector in job creation.  I have continually maintained that in order for America to return to prosperity the private sector must have the necessary tools in order to provide jobs and economic security for our citizenry.”

“This new index clearly demonstrates that the policies put in place by John Yarmuth have created new competition for the private sector – the Government.”

“Our free market system thrives on competition but the policies put forth by our own Congressman have clearly created an unfair playing field.”

“I strongly believe that we must dismantle the 800 pound Gorilla that Yarmuth has helped create and reduce the regulations and taxes that are impeding on real job creation and economic security for our Country.”

“The voters in the 3rd District do not share Yarmuth’s Big Government is good philosophy and come November we will reduce the employment in our Government by at least one tax and spend enabler – John Yarmuth!”

Becoming part of the Freshmen 50 Bullpen

Jeff Reetz Statement on becoming part of the Freshmen 50 Bullpen

(Louisville) Today Jeff Reetz became a candidate in the “Bullpen” of The Freshmen 50, a coalition of candidates around the country dedicated to fiscal and legislative responsibility.

“Over the course of this campaign, residents in the 3rd Congressional District have continuously expressed their support for a better government.  The six reforms espoused by this non-partisan political action committee are the very items that the voters here are demanding.   I am proud to associate myself with “The Freshmen 50” and their mission.”

The six reforms of The Freshmen 50 are as follows:

- Apply the Law Equally:  Laws that apply to all citizens must also apply to members of Congress and their staff

- Term Limits:  Limit terms in Congress to no more than 12 years in the House and Senate, respectively

- Enforce Congressional Ethics: Yearly tax and expense audits, former Congressmen and their staff cannot be lobbyists, allow the ethics committee to do their job

-  Read the Bill: Prior to final vote, the entire bill must be read out loud on the floor of the House; if a representative is not present for the entire reading, he cannot vote

- Tax Reform:  Repeal our current tax code in favor of one that taxes only once, at one rate, and require a 2/3-majority vote for any new tax

- Balance the Budget:  Amend the Constitution to require a balanced budget

Currently, nearly 100 candidates have signed onto the platform and many of those candidates are in the most competitive races around the country.  This is the answer to the concerns of many Americans today – a coalition with the accountability and strength in numbers to get the job done.

Americans for Prosperity Applauds U.S. House Candidate Jeff Reetz

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, April 22, 2010                                    Contact: James Valvo (703) 224-3200

Americans for Prosperity Applauds U.S. House Candidate Jeff Reetz

                                                  -Signs No Climate Tax Pledge-

Washington, DC—The grassroots free market group Americans for Prosperity (AFP) today applauded U.S. House candidate Jeff Reetz (3rd District) for signing the group’s “No Climate Tax” pledge.  Reetz joins more than 475 bipartisan lawmakers and candidates on the federal, state and local levels pledging to “oppose legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in government revenue.”

“The one thing elected officials should be able to agree on is that global warming shouldn’t be used as an excuse to hike taxes on citizens and businesses,” said AFP Vice President for Policy Phil Kerpen. “We encourage all of Kentucky’s elected officials and candidates for elected office to sign the pledge.”

Kentucky signers include: U.S. Senate candidates Trey Grayson and Rand Paul; and State Representative Mike Cherry.

Cap-and-trade took its first step toward enactment last year when the U.S. House narrowly passed the Waxman-Markey energy tax bill, which escaped the lower chamber by a scant seven votes despite significant bipartisan opposition.  The U.S. Senate has struggled to pass companion legislation, with several key Democratic senators expressing opposition to the energy tax bill.

President Obama has made no secret of his support for the bill, which would be the largest tax increase in American history.  The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office scored the House plan as an $846 billion increase in federal revenue, a burden that will be borne by taxpayers and consumers for decades to come.

“Using the guise of climate change to transfer dollars from hard-working citizens to bureaucratic big government is unacceptable,” said Kerpen. “Regardless of their stance on global warming, this should be common ground for all of our elected officials at all levels of government.”

The pledge is available online at www.NoClimateTax.com. AFP does not endorse candidates.  All elected officials and candidates are encouraged to sign the pledge and go on the record in opposition to using the climate change issue to increase taxes and grow the size of government.
Americans for Prosperity® (AFP) is a nationwide organization of citizen leaders committed to advancing every individual's right to economic freedom and opportunity. AFP believes reducing the size and scope of government is the best safeguard to ensuring individual productivity and prosperity for all Americans. AFP educates and engages citizens in support of restraining state and federal government growth, and returning government to its constitutional limits. AFP has more than one million members, including members in all 50 states, and 25 state chapters. More than 55,000 Americans in all 50 states have made a financial investment in AFP or AFP Foundation.  For more information, visit www.americansforprosperity.org.

Jeff Reetz Advances to ‘On the Radar’
Kentucky Candidate Takes First Step Toward ‘Young Gun’ Status

Washington- The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has officially announced businessman and Republican Jeff Reetz (KY-03) as an ‘On the Radar’ candidate, an important first step in its Young Guns program. Founded in the 2007-2008 election cycle by Reps. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Paul Ryan (R-WI), the Young Guns program is a member-driven organization dedicated to electing open-seat and challenger candidates nationwide. Reetz is running in Kentucky’s Third Congressional District against Democrat incumbent John Yarmuth.

The Young Guns program is designed to assist Republican candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives achieve goals and benchmarks focused on the fundamentals of a winning campaign. By achieving ‘On the Radar’ status, Reetz has already proven his ability to build a successful campaign structure.

“The NRCC is committed to working with Jeff Reetz as he continues to meet the rigorous goals of the Young Guns program,” said NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions. “Jeff is an accomplished, independent leader who will fight for job creation, which is why he already has significant momentum behind his campaign. I am confident that Republicans will be successful in our effort to defeat John Yarmuth, an out-of-touch Washington politician solely focused on his party’s failed big-government, big-spending agenda.”

A successful entrepreneur and small business owner in Louisville for over a decade, Reetz has created hundreds of jobs for Louisville families and is deeply connected to the economic pulse of the region.  Being passionate about service and prosperity, Reetz has sought to give back to the local community, serving on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kentuckiana and supporting the Dare to Care food bank over the years. Through his company, he has had the opportunity to support many different charities throughout Louisville including the Special Olympics, Leukemia/Lymphoma charities, and World Hunger Relief. Reetz and his family have committed themselves to the betterment and growth of the region through expanded business opportunities and continued philanthropy.

Having achieved certain benchmarks to place him on the road to victory, Jeff Reetz now faces a new set of rigorous goals that will help him advance to the next level of the Young Guns program and help him build a competitive, effective and winning campaign.

Jeff Reetz statement on Yarmuth's Continued Support for Job Killing Policies

April 2nd, 2010                                                                        Jeff Reetz for Congress 2010
For Immediate Release:                                           contact: Alyson Reetz 502-244-5805

Jeff Reetz statement on Yarmuth’s Continued Support for
Job Killing Policies

(Louisville) On the heels of the passage of the Yarmuth supported Nationalized Health Care, comes the news that unemployment has risen to 12 percent in Jefferson County – this represents an almost 2 percentage point increase over last year’s reports (The Courier Business Journal 4/2/10).

“I am astonished that despite repeated outcries from the residents of the 3rd District, our Representative continues to advocate policies that kill jobs and growth in Louisville. While voters continue to demand that government focus on Job Creation, Yarmuth works to pursue the policies of Nancy Pelosi and the liberal left.”

“Just yesterday, I listened with amazement when Congressman Yarmuth told members of the Rotary Club that the tax cut incentives given to companies to create jobs was wrong and his Health Care bill took all of those incentives away – to me and everyone else listening that was expressed support for a TAX INCREASE.”

“Yarmuth’s position clearly indicates that he doesn’t believe that all of the people that received jobs because of these tax incentives don’t deserve to work. The fine people at Humana that were recently laid off due to the economy don’t deserve to be told they aren’t worthy by their Congressman. That is absolutely wrong and shameful.”

“When elected to work for the People of the 3rd Congressional District, I will work hard to ensure that jobs are created and sustained. We need a systematically new approach to governing whereby the Government works for the people not the other way around.”

40 for 40

40 for 40

On Sunday March 21st John Yarmuth and the Democrats in Congress voted for the biggest expansion of Government in history; moving one sixth of our economy to government control by passing the Health Care Bill. This was done even though the majority of Americans said they did not want the Health Care legislation as written or proposed. This legislation raises taxes by $572 billion, takes $500 billion out of Medicare and increases our already staggering National Debt.

As your Congressman I will join forces with other Republicans to repeal and replace this legislation with a health care plan that provides coverage for all Americans in a fiscally sound and responsible way WITHOUT government involvement. In order to do this the Republicans must win back control of the Congress in 2010. Will you help me retake control of the House?

Please go to our website, (www.reetzforcongress.com), and make a contribution of $40 to help me defeat John Yarmuth in November and achieve a Republican majority in Congress. Your contribution of $15, $25 or $40 will help me continue to communicate the message that John Yarmuth does not represent the best interests of the voters here in the third district and that as your congressman I will put Louisville First!

Now is the time for Republicans to act to restore fiscal responsibility in Congress and put America back on the road to growth and prosperity.

Please go to our website and make your contribution of $40 between now and March 31st.

Obamacare Press Release

March 21, 2010                                                                                                                          Jeff Reetz for Congress 2010

Jeff Reetz reacts to the House Passage of ObamaCare

(Louisville) Jeff Reetz issued the following statements regarding the passage of Health Care “reform” in the House tonight:

“Today is a sad day for all Americans.  I am deeply concerned and upset that Congressman Yarmuth and his best friends in Washington, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, are not only ignoring our Constitution, but are also clearly not listening to the millions of Americans that are opposed to this massive expansion of government.”

“Like many Louisvillians, I am strongly opposed to this legislation and when elected this November, my first order of business will be to repeal this massive expansion of government.”

“I find it appalling that John Yarmuth and his colleagues are telling the American public that this is the largest middle class tax cut ever enacted.  A tax cut implies that the public would receive an increase in their take home pay, but instead this bill will force at least 46 percent of those families making less than $66,150 to pay an individual mandate tax.”

“If this bill included a tax cut then why on earth would the bill also provide for the addition of more than 16,000 new IRS employees?”

“Despite President Obama’s pledge not to raise one tax for those making less than $250,000, this Health Care bill violates that pledge 12 times and raises more than $569 billion in new taxes.”

“As a small business owner, I am extremely disappointed in the actions of Congressman Yarmuth and his best friend Nancy Pelosi for insisting on the implementation of  more than $52 billion in new taxes on employers who cannot afford to pay “Government mandated minimum” employee health care, particularly when unemployment stands at 9.7%.  Once again Yarmuth isn’t putting Louisville first, he is putting the Government First!”

“I recognize that our Health Care system needs reform but we need to tackle this reform within the confines of our Constitution and utilizing the free market principles we hold so dear in this country.  Please visit my website at www.reetzforcongress.com for more information about my Health Care Plan. ”

Reetz Believes Voters Deserve Real Leadership, Not Pelosi’s Benchwarmer
On Health Care, Yarmuth Is Playing For the Wrong Team

Rep. John Yarmuth, who once pledged to vote against any health care bill that did not include a public option, appears to have placed principle aside to be a “team player” for the sake of politics and Nancy Pelosi.

“John Yarmuth (Ky.) (Y) Considered a team player. Likely yes.” (The Hill, "WHIP COUNT: House Democrats' Positions on the Healthcare Reform Bill," March 9, 2010)

Since voting for the Pelosi-backed bill passed by the House in December 2009, Yarmuth has played the field on where he stands on the pending government takeover of the health care system. Recently, Yarmuth said he supported a piece by piece approach.
What probably would be the best, at least from my perspective, for us to do, the best thing on health care, would be send pieces of the program -- pass them here, send them to the Senate. Let the American people digest this bit by bit, bite by bite, because it is a very full plate and it's very complicated.” (Brian Beutler, “House Leadership Scrambles To Contain Fallout, Right Course on Health Care,” Talking Points Memo, 1/20/10)

But he began to find his way back to Team Pelosi, parroting the Democrat demonization of those who favored adopting a bill with bipartisan support.

Kentucky Democrat John Yarmuth derided Republican calls to start over on health care. ‘No, we can't start over because if we start over life will be over for too many Americans,’ he said.” (Obama Continues Push for Health Care, The Associated Press, March 10, 2010)

In the end, it should come as no surprise that Yarmuth jumped back on the Pelosi bandwagon.

“’She’s a masterful herder of cats,’ said Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.), a sophomore who wrested his district from a Republican. (Dem Campaign Anxiety: Vulnerables Say They Lack Cover from Pelosi,” The Hill, September 24, 2009)

Jeff Reetz will be a leader for all citizens of the 3rd District and will play for their team. “When I am elected, I will listen to the concerns and views of my constituents. When the future of our children and our nation is at stake, we should all recognize the importance of teamwork and working together to find solutions. As your Congressman, the TEAM I will play for will be made up of the residents from the 3rd Congressional District of Kentucky,” Reetz added.

Jeff Reetz Says It Is Time For Real Leadership on Jobs & Health Care

Jeff Reetz Says It Is Time For Real Leadership on Jobs & Health Care
Hospital Cuts Demonstrate John Yarmuth’s Lack Of Focus

Jeff Reetz, candidate for Kentucky’s 3rd District, says the time has come to send a real leader to Washington to refocus attention on the priorities of the residents of Louisville and their families.

“For more than a year, Democrats in Congress and the Obama Administration have been telling America they were focused on creating jobs. Or was that health care? The fact that Jewish Hospital was forced to cut one-sixth of their workforce due to a rising number of uninsured shows that the families of the 3rd District deserve a leader with real solutions and a real commitment to getting the job done,” Reetz said.

The Courier-Journal reported that Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare is being forced to eliminate 500 jobs - the first large-scale job reductions in a Louisville hospital system since recession.

According to a survey conducted for the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, one-third of Kentuckians – a percentage which only will increase if Washington continues in its failure to put Americans back to work, are without health care. Evidently John Yarmuth cannot “walk and chew gum” - or address health care and jobs – at the same time.

U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth, D-3rd District, said he believes they reflect larger problems in health care.

’While we should all be concerned about those who have lost jobs,’ he said, we also have to focus on the fact that these cuts were made because thousands more of our friends and neighbors aren’t getting the health care they need.’” (“Jewish Cuts Jobs, Citing Declining Patient Load, Rise In Uninsured,” Courier-Journal, March 10, 2010)

Mr. Yarmuth, our friends and neighbors in the 3rd District are “concerned” about health care AND job creation. “Like many families in Louisville, as an entrepreneur and a father, I have had to juggle several priorities simultaneously. When I am elected to represent the interests of the 3rd District, I will bring the experience, the real leadership skills and the ability to focus on bringing people together to get real results,” pledged Reetz.

We Need Consumer Protection, Not More Bureaucracy

We Need Consumer Protection, Not More Bureaucracy

With the fate of health care reform in question, top Senators have turned their attention to a lesser known, but potentially dangerous piece of legislation that will have a significant impact on Kentucky’s consumers and small businesses. The so-called Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA) would create a massive new federal bureaucracy that could further limit the availability of credit and impose new economic costs on our nation and our state at a time when job creation should be the number one priority.

When unemployment in Kentucky is at 10.3%, we cannot afford proposals that will further reduce access to credit for businesses and their customers, making it harder for them to put Kentuckians back to work. That’s not good for Kentucky’s economy and it’s not good news for Kentucky’s unemployed.

While everyone agrees enhancing consumer protection is paramount, there’s a right way to do it and a wrong way.

The right way is to use common sense to fix what’s broken—filling regulatory gaps, ensuring consumers have access to plain English disclosures about the risks of financial products, and making sure coordinated regulators are pursuing tough-as-nails enforcement against fraudulent and predatory practices. The wrong way is to add more government red tape on top of the seven agencies Congress already instructed to protect consumers, especially when that new bureaucracy could oversee businesses that merely extend credit to customers or sell their goods and services to firms that offer consumer financial products.

There are four major problems with the CFPA. First, its authority would be truly expansive, extending far beyond traditional financial services products to a vast segment of the economy. The agency would hit businesses with new regulations even though they have little to do with consumer finance, including advertisers, utilities, lawyers, educational institutions, and technology companies. It’s classic big government at its worst.

Second, the CFPA would restrict access to credit and limit consumer choice at a time when both are essential for revitalizing our economy, creating jobs, and getting families back on their feet. Vague regulatory standards will make it harder than ever for businesses to comply with new regulations. The result would be new bureaucracy that would choke off credit to families and small businesses. Banks would be less likely to extend credit in communities like Louisville. Those that can secure credit would see their borrowing costs increase. This is a prescription for economic disaster.

Third, the CFPA would further complicate an already Byzantine set of regulations. The agency would set the floor, not the ceiling, for state consumer protection laws. Rather than a uniform national standard that would eliminate the potential for harmful or deceptive products to slip through the cracks, there would be the CFPA and 50 state regulators, each with their own set of rules, and interpretation of the CFPA. Companies and their customers would be lost in a maze of confusing and overlapping edicts.

Fourth, this proposal will undermine the safety and soundness of our depository institutions by separating regulation of financial products from regulation of the financial institutions themselves. That approach is not just duplicative and inefficient; it will hamstring the ability of regulators to comprehensively monitor our financial institutions to ensure they are healthy, safe, and sound.

The Federal Government should follow this rule when deciding how to “fix” consumer protection laws—first, do no harm. The Congress and the administration should go back to the drawing board and focus on enacting bipartisan solutions that protect consumers without threatening jobs.

STATEMENT FROM JEFF REETZ, CANDIDATE FOR 3RD CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT, ON HOUSE PASSED JOBS BILL

(Louisville) “Once again the Democrat leadership in Congress has put “nonsense” in front of common sense when it comes to creating jobs. The so-called Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act provides no incentive for the consumer to actually put money back in the economy.”
“As a small businessman employing more than 700 people, I distinctly understand the need to put people back to work and wish I could provide more jobs. However, the “incentives” in this bill do nothing to get people to buy the services small businesses provide. We need to provide relief directly to the consumer in the form of tax cuts while at the same time reducing the number of regulations that directly hurt small businesses.”

As an example, the Associated Builders and Contractors notes in a statement of opposition to this bill:

The construction industry has lost 1.9 million jobs since December 2007, including 75,000 in January 2010 alone, and the current unemployment rate stands at nearly 25 percent. Simply providing employers with tax incentives to hire new employees will not solve the crux of the problem currently facing our industry: the lack of projects on which our member companies can work.”

Reetz stated “Congress needs to stop using the taxpayers as their own personal ATM and provide real solutions to the problems facing our Country. My plan would provide real relief not only to small businesses but also the consumer while reducing reckless government spending. Our Congressman clearly has the wrong priorities and come May 18th, the Republican voters in the 3rd District will send a loud and clear message about what their priorities are for the direction of this Country.”

Humana Press Release

February 18, 2010                                       Jeff Reetz for Congress 2010
For Immediate Release:                             contact: Alyson Reetz 502-244-5805

STATEMENT FROM JEFF REETZ, CANDIDATE FOR 3RD CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT, ON HUMANA LAYOFFS

(Louisville) “Like many Louisvillians I am deeply saddened of the news that Humana will be shedding more than 1,400 jobs and my hearts and prayers go out to those affected by this decision.”

“I would also like to apologize to those affected for the actions that Congressman Yarmuth has helped create through his repeated actions to create a Nationalized Health Care system. I am amazed that Yarmuth will cozy up to Nancy Pelosi in advocating a system that will cripple the Health Care industry and yet will come back to Louisville and express his desire to “protect” companies like Humana.”

“I am a firm believer that Patients, not the government, need to exercise more control over their health plan.  Decisions about care should be between a patient and their doctor, not a board of bureaucrats determining what the most cost effective treatment should be.”

“The bottom line is we need a Congressman that puts Louisville First, and not someone who talks out of both sides of his mouth. People’s jobs and livelihoods are at stake because of the decisions being made in Washington.”

Jeff Reetz to Challenge John Yarmuth in Kentucky's 3rd District

GOP businessman, job-creator & Louisville community leader running for Congress

LOUISVILLE, KY – GOP congressional candidate Jeffrey T. Reetz released the following statement to declare his candidacy:
“Over the past 3 years, I have become increasingly concerned with the leadership of our country, including our Congressional Representative in the 3rd District.  After long discussions with family and friends over the issues facing our community, I made the decision to run for Congress.  As such, I filed paperwork last week with the Federal Election Commission establishing a campaign committee to run for the 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.”

“I was raised in a middle-class family, built a successful business that not only provides jobs to hundreds of Kentuckians but also serves thousands of families yearly with a wholesome and nourishing staple, and have served our community’s less fortunate through various charitable activities. But with double digit unemployment; entire local industries at risk; our national deficit at a record high; and our troops still at war; I can no longer sit on the sidelines and I know more needs to be done to protect our community.”

“Once in Congress, I will leverage my background and common-sense to create good-paying jobs, fight every step of the way for Louisville families and seniors, and for the small businesses that form the backbone of our economy. Using my experience in the private sector, I will work nonstop towards ensuring that solutions to our problems are enacted.  I will not give you excuses for what can’t be done but instead will give you real results that benefit every resident in the 3rd District.”

“As a husband, father and grandfather, I am running to leave our children with a brighter future. For the first time in my life, I am concerned that their future is in doubt as a result of the bitter partisanship that permeates Washington and the same-old big government approach taken by too many in Congress.  There have been too many empty promises and poor decisions made by our representative. Some of these decisions have resulted in benefits being shared by folks representing their own self interests and not the fine people of Louisville.”

“I will move quickly to organize a strong grassroots campaign behind which all residents in the 3rd District can unite. In the coming weeks I will be putting together the foundation of this campaign which will make Louisvillians proud.”
